How To Set Up Medical ID and Emergency Info

You’re going on a run. You’re listening to music and all you have with you is your phone and the house key. You have an accident as you collide with a car. You are not able to communicate anymore and no one knows you or anything about you. How are people now supposed to contact your partner or your parents? How does the doctor know what blood type you are, what medicine you might take or which allergies you might have?

With the Medical ID/ Emergency Info, you can set up on your phone! You have your phone with you all the time. Let it help you because it can speak for you when you can’t. And in an emergency, every minute counts.

Both iPhones and Android phones give you the opportunity to set up a Medical ID (Apple) or Emergency Info (Android). Even when you lock your phone with a code or a pattern people still have access to this important information about you. Since iOS 8 and Android 7 you can fill out these emergency details. All this information about yourself is neither with Apple nor Andorid included in any data or shared with other apps – it is stored on your device only.

Apple’s Medical ID

To enter information about yourself, just open the App “Health” and find in the bottom right corner “Medical ID”. During the edit, you also have the opportunity to alter whether you want the info to be shown when your phone is locked.

This info includes:

  • Name and birthday
  • Medical Conditions
  • Medical Notes
  • Allergies & Reactions
  • Medications
  • Blood Type
  • Organ Donor yes or no
  • Weight
  • Height

and also:

  • Emergency Contacts (can be called from the owner’s phone).

It also shows when the information has been updated last at the very end of the ID.

Android’s Emergency Info

To enter the information about yourself open “Settings” > “Users” > “Emergency information”. This information include:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Blood type
  • Allergies
  • Medications
  • Organ donor
  • Medical notes

and also:

  • Emergency contacts (can be called from the owner’s phone).

This then looks like (galery):

That’s it! Maybe it’ll help you someday…even making you aware of the existence could help at an accident scene later. Be safe and take care! Hopefully no one will ever need it 🙂
